Tilda Swinton has been making the press rounds to promote her upcoming indie drama We Need to Talk About Kevin (opening in the U.K. Oct. 21), in which she plays the mother of a high-school boy who goes on a killing spree. And while Swinton's performance is already garnering Oscar buzz, it's the revelation that she once harbored some murderous desires of her own that truly has people talking.
In an interview with U.K. magazine The Telegraph (as reported by Us Weekly), the 50-year-old actress reveals that she had planned to murder her newborn brother when she was 4 or 5 years old. Swinton says she suppressed the memory for years, but finally remembered during the media hoopla surrounding the 1993 murder of British 2-year-old James Bulger.
"I was disappointed, because he was the third boy," says Swinton, explaining why she considered killing her brother. "That was enough as far as I was concerned."
As you may have guessed, Tilda -- who has 13-year-old twins Xavier and Honor with longtime partner John Byrne -- didn't kill her sibling. In fact, she was ultimately considered his savior.
"I went into his room to kill him, saw some ribbons from a bonnet going into his mouth, and began to pull them out," Swinton recalls. "And I was discovered saving his life. So I had this strange reputation -- my brother's savior -- and no one knew I wanted to kill him. It took the Bulger case for me to remember that I'd seriously wanted to."
