Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, & More News That Rules, In Metal File

'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.

On October 14, Dimmu Borgir — who just happen to be Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band — will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.

"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told Metal File last week, after dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."

Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour — which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with Moonspell, Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch — to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.

"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- is this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."

Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled In Sorte Diaboli. "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon — he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.

"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band — I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."

While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.

"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write — we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."

Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older — guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.

"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it — we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."

The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.

The rest of the week's metal news:

Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, Winds of Plague, have announced ex-Azusa drummer Art Cruz has joined their ranks — he replaced Jeff Tenney. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...

What the world really needs is another Led Zeppelin box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD box set. For just $200, you'll get 1969's Led Zeppelin, 1969's Led Zeppelin II, 1970's Led Zeppelin III, 1971's Led Zeppelin IV, 1973's Houses of the Holy, 1975's Physical Graffiti, 1976's Presence, 1976's The Song Remains the Same, 1979's In Through the Out Door and 1982's Coda, as mini-LP replicas, with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves. Now, you know what you can get your dad for Christmas. ...

Former Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz have teamed up for a new project they're calling Times of Grace, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic — we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect — we are pushing genre boundaries." To quote "Meet the Parents," we'll look forward to that, Greg. ...

The Funeral Pyre and Early Graves will be hitting the road together next month, starting November 7 in South Lake Tahoe, California. Dates are booked through November 21 in Hollywood. ...

The latest incarnation of Brujeria, which features Carcass frontman Jeff Walker and Napalm Death's Shane Embury, have lined up several U.S. dates for this winter. The band will begin its brief trek November 28 in Denver, and wrap things up in Dallas on December 7. ... Demiricous will be touring with the Gates of Slumber starting November 9 in Denver, for a jaunt that's scheduled to run through December 6 in Indianapolis. ...

Nearly three years after Roadrunner Records' Roadrunner United concert, which took over the Nokia Theater in New York's Times Square, the label is now releasing footage from that special night as "Roadrunner United: The Concert." The DVD, which hits stores December 9, will boast two discs and 24 live tracks, including Life of Agony's "River Runs Red," King Diamond's "Abigail," Killswitch's "My Last Serenade," Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" and Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist." ...

According to Blabbermouth, Verrot, bassist for Swedish black-metal outfit Elimi, committed suicide on October 3. In a statement, the band said, "Verrot was a very good friend, brother, an excellent bass player/musician and an important part of Elimi; we respect his decision and hope he'll find his way with the dark gods of Chaos. Let your black flame be a part of what brings forth the day of wrath."

Justin Bieber, Mark Wahlberg Open Up About Basketball Flick

'It's going to be crazy,' Bieber promises at MTV Movie Awards.

It seems that things are well under way for the basketball movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber. How do we know? Well, the guys themselves updated us this weekend at two of the biggest events of the summer.

Wahlberg told MTV News on Saturday night at Spike's Guys Choice Awards that while he thought he'd be playing Bieber's part initially, he eventually came around to playing the "old guy" role.

"Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of like 'The Color of Money,' " he teased. "So I get this call from Paramount [where they tell me about the story about] an old guy and a young guy. I'm like, 'Cool, let's get Jack [Nicholson]. Let's get Robert De Niro. Let's get Robert Duvall.' And they go, 'What about Garrett Hedlund?'

"I'm like, 'For what?' " he further recalled. "They're like, 'For the young guy.' "

(Check out photos of Justin Bieber and tons of other stars backstage at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards!)

The next day, at the MTV Movie Awards, Justin Bieber seemed equally excited about the project, if not a bit tight-lipped. "I know ," he promised. "You'll have to see. I can't really reveal too much about it."

According to previous reports, Wahlberg has been keeping tabs on the young star. "He loves the idea," Wahlberg said last month. "He's been sending me video, he sent me a video of himself, and, yeah, I think he's really talented." The idea was sparked after Wahlberg and partner Stephen Levinson caught Bieber playing basketball in February during a celebrity game held during NBA All-Star Game weekend.

Beyonce Responds To 4 Album Leak

'While this is not how I wanted to present my new songs, I appreciate the positive response,' she tells MTV News in a statement.
By Gil Kaufman

Beyoncé is taking a glass-half-full approach to the leak of her entire 4 album three weeks before its June 28 release date.

In a statement released to MTV News on Wednesday (June 8), Beyoncé lamented the early arrival but said she's making the most of the eagerness of her fans to get their hands on her first new batch of songs since 2008's double-disc I Am ... Sasha Fierce.

"My music was leaked and while this is not how I wanted to present my new songs, I appreciate the positive response from my fans," the singer wrote. "When I record music I always think about my fans singing every note and dancing to every beat. I make music to make people happy and I appreciate that everyone has been so anxious to hear my new songs."

Beyoncé fans were psyched Tuesday when her collabo with Andre 3000, "Party," leaked weeks before the new album was due. It was one of several leaks the album has faced over the past week. A short time after the Kanye West and Consequence-produced "Party" slipped out, another song, "Countdown," which samples the Boyz II Men tune "Uhh Ahh," also surfaced, followed by the entire album.

While B's team scrambles to take down the offending links that have popped up all over the Web, some online rogues have taken to Twitter to put up links, making it harder for the label to track down the music. Fans have already gotten a number of listens to tunes from the disc, including the uptempo dancehall first single "Run the World (Girls)," the lush ballad "1+1" and the second official single "Best Thing I Never Had." Another tune, "End of Time," which samples late Afrobeat superstar Fela Kuti, has also leaked online.

Have you heard any of the leaked album, or are you waiting for the official release? Let us know in the comments.

'Twilight,' Justin Bieber Rule MTV Movie Awards

Sneak peeks from 'Breaking Dawn' and 'Deathly Hallows' make a splash at the big show.
By Gil Kaufman

Hollywood may have just found the ultimate killer mega-sequel on Sunday night (June 5) when "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" ran the table at the MTV Movie Awards, taking home five big ones, including Best Movie and Best Female and Male performance wins for stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Not too shabby for a bunch of undead vampires, buff werewolves and the lady who loves them.

In the process, the kids from rainy Forks, Washington, nearly blanked the also multiply-nominated cast of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1," surely giving someone in Hollywood a great idea to stage the ultimate fan-freakout-fantasy-world showdown once the two series wrap up.

In the meantime, fans made do with lots of Pattinson and Stewart on Sunday night, along with generous helpings of Taylor Lautner and more Arnold Schwarzenegger illegitimate-kid jokes than anyone imagined from host Jason Sudeikis.

With a set that looked like a backlot fantasia, with a ring of fake grass, crystal towers, caves, butterflies, LED lights and glittery, hanging jewels, the stage at the Gibson Amphitheatre was a nod to the "Lord of the Rings" and the fantasy world of movies.

And with their hands all over each other, "Friends with Benefits" co-stars Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake proudly handed out the night's first award, Best Male Performance, to "Twilight" star Pattinson, who beat out love-triangle rival Lautner for the honor. "I really didn't think I was going to win," said the perpetually self-effacing undead star, who got a smile but no congratulatory, well, anything, from co-star Stewart. "This is kind of embarrassing now. Zac Efron was crying and stuff in that clip. ... Thanks for showing all your support to the movies. See you next year!"

Check out photos of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and other "Twilight" stars at this year's big show!

Was there any doubt whether Tom Felton would take home the Best Villain award for his truly terrifying performance of blond baddie Draco Malfoy in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1"? Flashing an uncharacteristic smile, the nice English lad said, "This will look very nice in my downstairs toilet," thanking fans for a decade of support and promising that the final installment will be worth the wait.

Poo Cocktail Supreme, a sawed-off arm, the world literally exploding all around you and the cuticle from hell: All worthy nominees, but it was Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" 3-D concert film that took the Best Jaw Dropping Moment prize. Though it looked like the Biebs wouldn't be on hand to take home the honor, he made a surprise appearance and thanked his director, manager and family. "But most of all I want to thank my fans. I love you," said Bieber, sporting white jeans and a blue blazer over a black T-shirt.

It wasn't all just movie magic, though. Funnyman Jim Carrey promised to bring some high-tech shenanigans to the proceedings, and he didn't disappoint. The "Mr. Popper's Penguins" star showed up in a green-screen suit that featured a number of high-tech images, but mostly just dogs humping. He was on hand to introduce the Foo Fighters, who lit the stage up with a blistering performance of their new single "Walk," with a set that included six strobing movie-set klieg lights.

Alas, Potter's Death Eaters had nothing on Bryce Dallas Howard and Xavier Samuel's showdown with Pattinson in "Eclipse," which also won for Best Fight. Pattinson bragged about winning the filmed fight, even as Howard apologized for trying to hurt him. "It's fine. I ripped your head off ... and now you're pregnant!" he said awkwardly, as Stewart cradled her face in her hands in embarrassment at his crack about their co-star's bulging baby belly.

You kind of couldn't go wrong with the Best Kiss category, especially if you're on Team Edward. But really? Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman didn't snag the traditionally Sapphic-friendly smooch trophy? Nope, not when RPattz and KStew are in the mix. Taking the stage for the third time, Pattinson sheepishly said he felt bad because he, well, didn't really feel like re-creating his smooch with Stewart from "Eclipse."

"You don't want to kiss me, do you?" he said to Stewart. "Well, I mean, it's been a long time, and ... I think we should finally go for it," she replied nervously, as the camera cut to a totally psyched Selena Gomez. "There's someone else in the audience I think will appreciate it a little more," Pattinson answered, before sprinting out to the crowd and laying a big, wet one on Lautner's mouth, forehead and hand. When he tried to snag the award from Stewart's hands, she grabbed it away and he grunted, "I wanna take you backstage!" in what amounts to PDA for these two.

Luckily for the nominees in the Best Line from a Movie category, there were no quotable muggles or vampires in the mix, so you can be sure 7-year-old "Grown Ups" star Alexys Nycole Sanchez was going to celebrate her win later that night by getting totally "chocolate wasted."

This is so cool!" squeaked the adorable moppet before reprising her money line.

The ladies in the Best Female Performance race were not so lucky, as Stewart beat out the Emmas (Stone and Watson), Jennifer Aniston and "Black Swan" star Portman. The publicity-shy actress, wearing a red leather minidress festooned with safety pins, said, "Oh, man, this is silly. It feels very incredible to be so completely supported by everybody that voted for me, it actually really, truly does. Thank you. We have obviously the greatest fans ever."

The luminous Reese Witherspoon was presented with this year's MTV Generation Award, preceded by her "Water for Elephants" co-star Pattinson, giving a touching, and quite salty, tribute to the actress, who's been his movie mother and lover.

"I'm just so lucky in my career and my life," said Witherspoon, who kindly corrected the punch line to one of Pattinson's most off-color jokes, while praising her chemistry with "Sweet Home Alabama" co-star Patrick Dempsey. "I just want to say to all the girls out there: I know it's cool to be bad, I get it ... but it's also possible to make it in Hollywood without a reality show ... so for all the girls out there, it's possible to be a good girl."

Janet Jackson Thrills Fans With Greatest Hits, Michael Tribute At Radio City

Singer covered songs ranging from classic 'Pleasure Principle' to 2008's 'Feedback' at New York show.
By Vaughn Schoonmaker

Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images

NEW YORK — Often imitated, never duplicated, Janet Jackson's outbursts of meticulous choreography, sassy exclamations and smoldering gazes into the audience kept them on their feet for the entire two-hour set of her greatest hits at Radio City Music Hall. Monday night marked the last of three sold-out shows at the historic venue on her monumental Number Ones: Up Close and Personal Tour.

Up-and-coming boy band Mindless Behavior opened the show with songs including "#1 Girl," "Future" and their debut single, "My Girl." With their Usher-esque dance moves and shouts like "Where the ladies at?" the boys brought the tween girls out of hiding, judging by the shrill screams escaping various corner of the music hall.

At 9:00 sharp, the lights went down and Janet's fans were on the edge of their seats, watching music videos for "The Best Things in Life Are Free" and "Rhythm Nation" projected on big screens across the venue. A small shadow drifted toward center stage, and when the colorful lights came up, Jackson, wrapped in a shoulder-padded catsuit, complete with slick short hair, blasted into "The Pleasure Principle," dancing as hard and intensely choreographed as she did when the song first came out in the 1980s.

With barely a spare second between songs, Janet dazzled her way through her biggest hits, including "Miss You Much," "All for You" and "Nasty," and more recent hits like 2008's "Feedback."

Videos displayed during Jackson's costume changes included vintage clips from "Diff'rent Strokes," a funny scene from "Poetic Justice" where Jackson slyly rejects the advances of Tupac Shakur's character, and a rather heavy scene, as Jackson's character in "Why Did I Get Married" destroys her husband's house with a golf club, screaming hysterically.

Considering the tough couple of years the Jackson family has faced, the dark moments in the video seemed fitting, and everyone was beside themselves with bittersweet joy when Michael Jackson's face popped up on the big screen and she performed their hit single "Scream."

Janet emerged for her encore in a tight white one-piece disco suit, and performed "Diamonds," "Make Me" and "Together Again," which appeared to be the biggest hit of the evening. As Jackson graciously bowed out, her straight face transitioned into a smirk, suggesting that despite the hard times she has experienced recently, we can expect to see this singing and dancing pop legend shine far into the future.

"Its amazing!" Janet fan Elena Mercantini gleamed afterward. "It's like she's still 20 years old!"

"She's hot, she's amazing and she's still got it after all these years" added Alison Klinger of Long Island. "Best concert I've ever been to!"

'Super 8' Creature's 'Cloverfield' Connection: J.J. Abrams Explains

Director responds to speculation that there's a link between the two movies.
By Eric Ditzian

J.J. Abrams
Photo: Megan Jones/ MTV News

Talking to J.J. Abrams about "Super 8" these days is a far different experience than it was just a few months ago. During a late April phone conversation, held as the director was putting the finishing touches on his film's score, Abrams was impressively, impenetrably tight-lipped about the project's many mysteries. When we asked how far into "Super 8" the much-hyped, never-seen creature would be revealed, he simply answered, "I would say the film will obviously answer that question."

But when Abrams stopped by the MTV Newsroom on Tuesday (June 14), fresh off his film's impressive, $35.5 million opening weekend, the guy couldn't have been more open. He answered lingering questions, cleared up sources of debate, and reveled in hearing how fans were taking in a film that is undoubtedly the most personal of his career. Among the most compelling topics we hit on were his revelations about the mysterious creature itself. (Needless to say, there are major spoilers below.)

Once the "Super 8" alien could be fully glimpsed as it wreaked havoc in a small Ohio town, some observers noted a similarity between the creature and the alien in 2008's "Cloverfield," which Abrams produced. As he explained it to us, there is a link between the two creatures, but not one that has any storytelling impact.

"The only connection between the creature in 'Super 8' and the creature in 'Cloverfield' is that they were both designed by the same guy, Neville Page," Abrams said. "They actually look very different, but they both have two eyes, a nose and a mouth. So, in that regard, it also looks a lot like Laurence Olivier!"

That answer puts to rest any suggestion that "Super 8" and "Cloverfield" exist in the same universe or that the "Super 8" alien's actions in the 1970s somehow impacted the other alien's later actions in "Cloverfield." When we asked Abrams if there is a same-universe connection between the two flicks, he said, "No."

Abrams went on to talk specifically about what they needed their multi-limbed "Super 8" alien to accomplish and why it ended up looking the way it did. "The creature in 'Super 8' needed to be scary and it also needed to have the ability to have a performance and be a little bit less scary too," he explained. "We didn't want a creature that was just running around thumping his chest and screaming. It needed to be something that was able to have a plan, have an experience. Smart enough to create something, build something.

"A lot of what the design was, was how do we do both?" Abrams continued. "If there was a big, strong soldier who had been taken in, was a prisoner of war and had escaped, if this guy was Rambo. Basically this could be someone who for some would be very scary, could be full of rage and also could be emotional and nuanced. So it really was a question of, he wasn't King Kong and a lot of what we needed to do was find a way to have a design that would give us that latitude to do both — the big scares and also the more subtle stuff."

Check out everything we've got on "Super 8."

Hoarding: An Existential Crisis?

Hoarding: An Existential Crisis?

Before it had a name, I was obsessed with hoarding. I remember seeing an episode of "The Oprah Show" in the early 2000s where a woman allowed the show's cameras into her home to reveal the unfathomable clutter inside. There was so much stuff that her family could barely find their way through the labyrinth from the kitchen to the living room. There were piles of dirty dishes that must have been months or even years old. Cat feces graced every available surface. The woman was a nurse or a teacher I think. How could anyone live like that? I just couldn't understand how someone could let so much crap accumulate and do nothing about it. It made me, well, almost angry, especially because of how it affected her family.

REVEALED! Meet Dwight Howard's Girlfriend Christine Vest....

We posted pics of 25-year-old Magic baller Dwight Howard with his new girlfriend earlier.  And it may have been the first time WE have seen her.  But we hear they've been a couple for about a year.

Deets on his new chick inside...

Meet Christine Vest.  We're told the hot baller has been dating her for about a year now.  And they have plenty of things in common.

23-year-old Christine put her 5'11 height to good use and played college basketball at California State in Chico, CA.  And she also appealed to his Christian loving side...she says she loves to sing gospel music.  We all know how Dwight used to talk constantly about how important the Bible and his religion was to his life when he first entered the league.

Ms. Vest is from Winnetka (part of L.A.), CA and is trying to embark on a singing career.  Here's some pics of the pretty lady:

She just joined twitter a couple weeks ago so no juicy nuggets about Dwight have been dropped...yet.

Here's a couple vids of her singing for her Youtube fans:

By the way, Christine says she plans to have a career working with children...you know...if this singing thing doesn't work out.

Although Beyoncé's latest album, 4, was still weeks from its official release date, on Wednesday it was leaked and quickly caused a stir on the Internet, prompting fans and critics to weigh in on the singer's first new album in nearly three years.

So far, B's promo for 4 has been fueled by the release of tracks like the snarling "Run the World (Girls)", the track "Best Thing I Never Had," and the emotional "1+1." But now that all of the tracks are out there on the Net, Beyoncé's album is up for debate.

The Atlantic compares her latest to her last album: "In between, there's an unmistakable, if gradual, turn from melancholic top 40 ballads to the confrontational snap of military drums and giddy proclamations of love. Is this I Am ... Sasha Fierce part 2? Not quite. The course of 4 documents a progression, a maturation, of Beyoncé's worldview."

Rolling Stone observes, "Beyoncé's new album, 4, is a change of pace for the R&B queen ... 4 is a more relaxed, personal set that emphasizes ballads over bangers and showcases the singer's nuances; it's very much the sort of album a pop star makes when she doesn't feel like she has anything to prove."

Ology.com gives Beyoncé credit for working with so many producers on the album, but making it all sound "cohesive." "It stands quite easily as Knowles' most vibrant album; not saying it's her best (B'Day still holds that title), but it begs to be performed live in front of hundreds of thousands of screaming fans unlike anything else she's released yet."

Fans seem equally opinionated — and enthusiastic — about the album, which officially drops on June 28.

"This album is so not her, she took chances, went off in a new direction as far as sound, her vocal techniques are off the charts on this album," Lee Joseph Chaisson wrote on MTV.com. "She brought it vocally; the sounds are so uniquely different, her whole approach."

"I've heard the Album...The **** it BANGIN!" Oren Acquirestino added. "Beyonce's really really singing on this album."

B's most devoted also took to her Facebook page to put their two cents in. Tatyana Krasko wrote, "Beyonce thanks for great work...Album '4' it's amazing... I love Beyonce."

Another fan, Sunny Lochab, gave the singer props and said he was buying the album regardless of the leak. "I downloaded it. I couldn't help it - everyone was talking about it! and I completely love it - I'll be buying it too to show love! you show true growth on this album...it's ALL love."

Michael Jackson's 'Thriller': Story Behind The 'Glee' Cover

MJ classic is mashed up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Heads Will Roll' for post-Super Bowl episode.
By Aly Semigran

Madonna, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and now, finally, Michael Jackson. The cast of "Glee" has covered plenty of icons during their first two seasons, but it's taken 33 episodes to get around to the King of Pop.

With a huge catalog of Jackson songs, the singing, dancing students of McKinley High paid homage to the late singer with one of his biggest staples (and, arguably, the greatest music video of all time) with their take on "Thriller."

The groundbreaking single from Jackson's best-selling album of the same name was mashed up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Heads Will Roll" for the post-Super Bowl episode (titled "The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle"), featuring a zombie-fied "Glee" cast.

Bound to become a smash all over again (though with its nonstop rotation at Halloween parties and wedding receptions until the end of time, it's never truly gone away), here's a brief history of the dance/pop classic.

Released on January 23, 1984, "Thriller" was the seventh, and final, single to be released from Jackson's smash record. According to the RIAA, the album (released by Epic Records) has gone gold 29 times, narrowly edging out the Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975 for the title of best-selling album of all time.

In 2009, MTV News estimated that the Thriller album was poised to go triple diamond, meaning 30 million records sold in the U.S. alone.

After Thriller's other singles (including "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something") dominated the charts, it was time for the spooky, undeniably original track to take over. The song "Thriller" also appeared on many of Jackson's other albums, including the compilations HIStory and Number Ones.

Clocking in at a little under six minutes (though the radio edit was closer to four-and-a-half), the song features pop-music mainstays like synthesizers but shakes things up with its spooky sound effects, including creaking floors, howling and thunder.

The song was produced by Quincy Jones and written and composed by Rod Tempterton and spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #4.

But it's the music video for "Thriller" that truly made it the phenomenon it was in the '80s and continues to be today. Less a music video than a mini-motion picture, the video (over 13 minutes long and directed by John Landis) won three MTV Video Music Awards and has been named the best music video of all time by many outlets, including VH1 for the special "VH1: 100 Greatest Videos."

The chiller features Jackson in that iconic red leather jacket on a date with his girlfriend (played by Ola Ray) before things go terribly awry. After all, as Jackson (whose disclaimer at the start of the video reads, "This film in no way endorses a belief in the occult") sings in the opening line, "It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark." Cue werewolves, zombies, Vincent Price's soliloquy and one of the most memorable dance sequences ever.

The video was (no pun intended) a monster hit. As the Los Angeles Times notes, "At the height of the song's popularity, MTV would run the 14-minute 'Thriller' video twice an hour."

Choreographed by Jackson and Michael Peters (who, as the LA Times also reported, appears in the video as one of the zombies) and with makeup by Oscar-winner Rick Baker (also an undead "Thriller" extra) was made with a huge budget of an estimated $500,000.

Still, the efforts paid off. Landis (who told the "Today" show back in 2009 that no one wanted to give them the funds to make the risky vid) made the accompanying 45-minute documentary about the venture, called "The Making of Thriller." Featuring the behind-the-scenes wizardry, as well as the music video in full, it would go on to move more than 10 million copies.

Since then, the signature song and video have seen their share fair of tributes in movies (notably in the 2004 comedy"13 Going on 30") and TV ("South Park," "Family Guy," "30 Rock," among others), not to mention the countless flash mobs that have gone viral. (Remember the prisoners in the Philippines who became overnight phenomenons on YouTube?)

Even with the "Glee" number, this likely won't be the last incarnation of "Thriller." Billboard reported in October that a "Thriller" film is in the works. With a plot allegedly revolving around Price's narration, Kenny Ortega, who directed Jackson's last effort, "This Is It," will reportedly helm the project.

Since Jackson's untimely passing on June 25, 2009, the song and video's legacy continue to live on. In the week following Jackson's death, "Thriller" was the best-selling track in the U.S., with sales of 167,000 copies on the Billboard Hot Digital Singles chart.

Then, in December 2009, "Thriller" was the first music video to ever be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. It seems "no mere mortal can resist ... the thriller" after all.

What did you think of the "Thriller" mash-up on "Glee"? Let us know in the comments!

New 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part 2' Trailer Debuts

Latest trailer is both action-packed and full of emotion.

Wowza. Wow. Wowza. That is our instant reaction to the latest trailer for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which just hit the Interwebs Thursday (June 16). Man oh man, is it a doozy. Even for those of us who've read the books over and over again and are fully prepared for what's going to unfold when the film hits theaters on July 17, this latest trailer is so action-packed, so full of intensity and emotion, it's almost too much to handle.

Almost.

The trailer opens with a distraught Lily Potter (Harry's mom) speaking to her infant son. "Harry, be safe," she says in a strained whisper. "Be strong." Cut to the words "Every moment he's lived has led to this," before an eerie voice-over by evil Dark Lord Voldemort comes in over flashback scenes of key moments in several of the previous seven films.

"Harry Potter, you have fought valiantly," Voldemort sneers. "Now join me, and confront your fate."

From here on out, much like the action in the second half of J.K. Rowling's seventh Potter book, things get very intense. There are flashes of Voldemort in several states of mind and presence, all of them ferocious and teeming with dark force.

"You've kept him alive so he can die at the proper moment," Snape says to him at one point.

Cut to Harry, Ron and Hermione riding a dragon, continuing their dangerous quest for the final horcruxes that will help bring an end to the Dark Lord.

This is followed by the beginning shots, or so it seems, of the epic battle royale at Hogwarts. Death eaters are surrounding the school, and Professor McGonagall orders the magical protectors of the school to come to life and protect them. What looks like the Dark Lord's army is shown assembled outside the gates, ready to attack, while our favorite Potter protagonists are shown waiting anxiously inside the school.

Suddenly the final battle is in full swing, wands slinging, wizards clashing, all of which can be very briefly summarized by these words: death and destruction.

In the midst of all the madness, there are emotional moments that seem to show favorite characters preparing to meet certain death. One poignant moment occurs in a brief exchange between Harry and Snape, a character who has always mysteriously walked the line between good and evil.

"Tell them how it happened that night," Harry says angrily to Snape, before a flashback of Dumbledore's death appears onscreen. "How you looked him in the eye, a man who trusted you, and killed him!"

There is also a brief moment where Harry is surrounded by the ghostly presences of his loved ones, people like his mother and godfather Sirius Black.

"You'll stay with me?" Harry asks his illusory supporters.

"Always," answers his mother.

"Until the end," Black adds.

The remaining seconds are all about action, action, action — specifically, the fight between Harry and Voldemort.

"Come on, Tom, let's finish this the way we started," Harry says to Voldemort as they stand on the precipice of a cliff. "Together!"

This is followed by more quick cuts of wand-wielding and explosions. And then Voldemort and Harry are shown battling once more, this time crawling toward one wand.

"Only I can live forever," Voldemort says with finality.

Who is the best "Harry Potter" character of all time? The "Harry Potter" World Cup will find out! Voting begins on Monday over on the MTV Movies Blog, but you can get the debate started now on Twitter with the hashtag #mtvpottercup.

Usher Gets Sick, Walks Offstage Mid-Show In Berlin

Singer cancels kick off date of European leg of his OMG Tour due to illness.

Usher was forced to delay the kick off of his European OMG Tour on Wednesday night in Berlin because of illness. In a statement released to fans, the singer apologized for the last-minute scratch, saying he felt he was suffering from a "sinus complication." Although the gig was rescheduled for Thursday night at the O2 World arena in Berlin, his German fans apparently weren't appeased by his effort.

"I am truly sorry to all my fans in Berlin who were inconvenienced by tonight's postponement of the show," the singer said in a statement about Wednesday's aborted concert. "I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give them the show that they properly deserve. ... I am looking forward to performing tomorrow and giving Berliners a great show."

According to the statement, the singer received treatment from doctors for a sinus issue that affected his balance, but a visibly still-ailing Usher was unable to finish the Thursday make-up show, reportedly abandoning the stage after just five songs.

On Friday (January 14), a follow-up statement from his spokesperson confirmed that he was too ill to play Thursday night's Berlin date and has been forced to reschedule the next three dates on the tour as well. The Rotterdam show originally scheduled for this week has been moved to March 1 and a show in Antwerp, also slated for this week, has been bumped to March 7.

The statement also updated the singer's condition: "Usher is suffering from upper respiratory illness, which is currently preventing him from performing a proper show. After consultation with doctors, he has been advised to reschedule the upcoming dates in order to get the rest he needs to ensure a complete recovery."

Footage posted on YouTube that was purportedly taken at the make-up performance in Berlin shows Usher standing silently at the microphone seemingly unable to sing, with fans booing him at first and then chanting, "Usher, Usher," as he approaches the microphone and apologizes to them for his struggles. "I appreciate your support," he told the fans wearily.

"I have been very excited about my European Tour and I deeply regret having to reschedule the shows," the singer said in the new statement. "I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused my fans. My fans are the best in the world and I am looking forward to getting better so that I can give them the show they deserve."

Usher wrapped up the North American leg of his tour in December and his overseas dates are slated to last through the spring.

Beyonce Dons Her Diva Crown On 'American Idol' Finale

'Idol' finalists joined the pop diva for an all-girl medley of B smash hits.

Who run the world? Girls!

The ladies of "American Idol" proved it during Wednesday's (May 25) season-closer when they performed a medley of Beyoncé hits, and were joined at the finish by Beyoncé herself.

The girls — Pia Toscano, Karen Rodriguez, Naima Adedapo, Ashthon Jones, Thia Megia and Haley Reinhart — hit the stage in various red-and-black ensembles and shared the stage during B's #1 smash "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Adedapo opened the song and threw some sass on it before passing the mic to Jones, the season's 13th-place finisher, who was eliminated during the first week of semifinals competition. The girls took their turns with the vocals and aped the familiar moves from the single's iconic video, which one rapper sort-of semi-famously referred to once as one of the greatest music videos of all time.

Megia and the frequently bilingual Rodriguez took center stage and duetted on "Irreplaceable," another #1 hit for Beyoncé, while the rest of the group chimed in on the "you must not know 'bout me" chorus. That transitioned into "Get Me Bodied," with each singer working the stage with maximum 'tude. "If I Were a Boy" was next, with the contestants sitting down on the side of the stage and Reinhart tackling the chorus with her big, growly vocals. Jones was also allowed to flex her muscles on the song, and Toscano soon took center stage as the song segued into "Déjà Vu." Toscano, frequently criticized during her "Idol" run for only attempting big, old-fashioned ballads, came off well during the uptempo song.

But then the Queen B herself hit the riser at the top of the stairs and showed the ladies a thing or two about being a diva. The big horns from "Crazy in Love," her first solo hit, signaled her arrival, and she hit the stage with an abundance of style and authority. She danced in a long line with the "Idol" ladies (and a few backup dancers to boot) and ran through a verse of the song, strutting across the stage and whipping her hair like a true star. The performance ended with the "Idol" gals wrapping their arms around Beyoncé in a big group hug, and without even performing her new single, Beyoncé showed that girls run the world, or at least the "Idol" stage.

Later in the show, Beyoncé returned to debut her new song, "One Plus One." She introduced the dramatic piano-led ballad as her "favorite" song, and sang it on a sparse, smoke-filled stage, dropping to her knees at one point and shaking hands with the fans gathered in front of her.

What did you think of the Beyoncé medley? Let us know in the comments!

Wiz Khalifa Squashes Waka Flocka Flame Beef Rumors

After wowing Bonnaroo crowd on Saturday, Wiz shut down gossip, telling MTV News, 'Me and Waka and are cool.'
By James Montgomery

MANCHESTER, Tennessee - Wiz Khalifa's Saturday evening set at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival was, by his own admission, probably the biggest show he's played since bursting onto the scene last year. And feeding upon the vibes of the crowd, he delivered a set that was as loose and lively as it was hit-packed and hungry.

"I was feeling the energy the whole time, and I've been doing a lot of shows and growing as a performer and an artist, so I just wanted to build on all that," he told MTV News following the performance. "Being a top act on such a huge stage in front of so many people, it's a great starting point for my career, because a lot of people work their whole careers and then get here."

Of course, though he was still basking in the afterglow of his Bonnaroo set, Wiz also felt the need to address an issue that (supposedly) occurred at another of his big-stage shows: rumors of a backstage altercation with Waka Flocka Flame at Hot 97's Summer Jam in New York earlier this month.

"Yeah, nothing happened backstage," Khalifa said. "It's always something; making up some rumor about something happening with me backstage during somebody's set, but nothing happened. Me and Waka and are cool. That's just people trying to promote negativity."

And to hear Wiz tell it, there's been a whole lot of that negativity going on in recent months. But, as he continues on the upswing of his young career, he's not going to let any of it get him down. After all, there will be plenty more shows like Bonnaroo on the horizon, and he prefers to focus on that.

"There's just so much fake sh-- going on. Like, people will buy into what's fake. According to people, this isn't my Rolex, you know?" he said. "But that's just what mugs like to think and what they like to talk about, but the reality of the situation is everything's under control. And this is my Rolex. That I bought."

MTV Cancels 'Skins'

MTV Cancels 'Skins'

"Skins is real. Skins is true. Skins is life," said the teens in the promo for the MTV series that premiered in January. Well, now Skins is over.

MTV has announced that there will not be another season of the controversial series that followed the lives of a group of teenagers. The sexually explicit nature of the show caused several advertisers like Taco Bell, Wrigley gum and General Motors to pull out of the show, and, according to the The Hollywood Reporter, viewership dropped by half by the second episode.

"Skins is a global television phenomenon that, unfortunately, didn't connect with a U.S. audience as much as we had hoped," an MTV rep said in a statement. "We admire the work that the series' creator Bryan Elsley did in adapting the show for MTV, and appreciate the core audience that embraced it."

The truth is, Skins was a show filled with drug-and-sex-obsessed teens who didn't always have the best intentions -- and it didn't necessarily represent the teen population of today. And, if you ask us, that's a very good thing.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Hits #1: What Next?

Bigger Than the Sound sizes Gaga's remarkable chart debut up against the year's other event album, Adele's 21.
By James Montgomery

Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images

As of Wednesday (June 1), Lady Gaga officially has the #1 album in the country, after selling 1,108,000 copies of Born This Way, according to Billboard.com. That's the biggest sales week since 50 Cent's The Massacre was released in 2005.

None of this should really surprise you, though. After all, no album in recent memory has been promoted to the degree that Born This Way has. You could hear it on FarmVille, in a Google Chrome commercial or through a special version of Tap Tap Revenge. You could buy it for 99 cents on Amazon.com, pick it up with a non-fat double latte at Starbucks (which also hosted an online Gaga-themed scavenger hunt) or get it at Best Buy with the purchase of a mobile phone and a two-year service contract.

That's to say nothing of the more than 20,000 "non-traditional" retailers that also stocked it ... noted musical hotspots like CVS Pharmacies, Whole Foods and Walgreens.

And in the weeks leading up to its release, you seemingly could not escape the woman behind Born This Way, either: Lady Gaga showed up on "Saturday Night Live," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "Late Show With David Letterman," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "American Idol" (twice). She guest-edited V magazine and the Metro newspaper. She appeared in a documentary that aired on MTV and greeted fans at a New York City Best Buy. No word on whether she also went door-to-door handing out samples of the album, but I wouldn't put it past her.

In short, there was no way you did not know of Born This Way's existence. As Newbury Comics' director of purchasing, Carl Mello, joked to me during the release-week hype, "If people aren't aware that Lady Gaga has an album coming out, then that's a problem for Interscope." So while BTW's big first week is certainly remarkable, it was by no means unforeseen. This was an album that, from the time Gaga first announced its title in September at the VMAs, was destined to debut at #1. It was inevitable. The real test begins in the weeks afterward, when we'll all see whether Gaga's got legs.

During my conversation with Mello, he noted that while Born This Way was the top seller at Newbury's 29 locations (by a long shot), holding strong at #2 was Adele's 21, an album that, in just 14 weeks, has sold nearly 2 million copies in the U.S. alone and snagged the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 nine times. You did not get 21 with the purchase of a Samsung Epic 4G or by rhythmically tapping on your iPhone, and it was not previewed on FarmVille. In fact, about the extent of its promotion has been one official single ("Rolling in the Deep"), a handful of TV appearances and a sold-out tour. And yet, the record has sold and continues to do so. It is, without a doubt, an album that has legs.

In fact, the success of 21 is all the more remarkable when you compare it to the all-out blitz that has surrounded (and, some argue, enveloped) Born This Way. Comparing the two seems almost implausible, if not impossible. But both are genuine phenomena, albeit in completely different ways: 21 is a slow-burning hit; its success is just about as unexpected as it is old-school. BTW is an event; a big blockbuster for which failure was not an option. Adele made the industry pay attention; Gaga had their ear since last year.

And while first-week numbers are all well and good, real success is measured eight to 10 weeks down the road; it's how we know whether an album resonates, whether the singles have stuck, whether the artist is in it for the long haul. Right now, I wouldn't bet on anyone catching either Adele or Gaga in the race for 2011's best-selling album, but the real question is: Can Born This Way overtake 21 for the title? Only time — and some hit singles — will tell. With the promo that led to BTW's release, Gaga has proven that she's willing to work, but now that the album has been foisted onto the world, the real work's just beginning: she's going to have to prove she's got legs too.

How do you think Born This Way will fare on the charts? Share your thoughts in the comments section!
